Tignes
Tignes may not be as picturesque as its neighbour Val d’Isere, but it is still considered the destination of choice for many of our more experienced riders, given its incredible terrain and the ease of access to the slopes from this purpose-built resort.
Nowhere else in Europe do you get such a wide combination of pistes and back-country such a short distance from your doorstep. Within 15 minutes of leaving your apartment, thanks to the completely modernised lift network, you can be at the top of the Grande Motte Glacier, at the ‘eye of the needle’ above Tignes Le Lac, or on the World Cup run into Val d’Isere. The altitude of the resort also plays in its favour, since, like Val d’Isere, it offers a micro-climate and therefore one of the best snow records in the Alpes – pretty much guaranteeing great snow at any time of the season.
The Espace Killy ski area includes Le Fornet, Val d’Isere and Tignes, altogether boasting over 300kms of pistes, 2 snow parks and 2 glaciers. It’s great for all levels of skiers: with couloirs, black runs and great mogul fields for the experts, intermediates are spoilt for choice with long sweepy blues and reds, and there are also a few good nursery slopes if you’re just beginning. Val d’Isere can also keep all standards of boarders entertained with some of the best kept parks in the Alps, not to mention incredible off-piste possibilities. Although not as large as the 3 Valleys, the Espace Killy is more than a match for it in terms of quality of terrain.
Val Claret is the highest of the Tignes villages at 2100m. It’s compact, so you’ll find everything you need at no more than a couple of minutes walk from your accommodation regardless of where you are. There are a number of great bars and restaurants and a unique atmosphere around the village. Given Tignes’ shortness of space you’ll find the accommodation tends to be pretty compact too – but this is the trade off for having this fantastic terrain on your doorstep!
Be sure to use the great little networks of public lifts for getting around resort too. All of the accommodation we offer is either 2 or 3 starred and has doorstep skiing. For those that have a little more to spend we can offer the 4 star MGM Ecrin des Neiges. Note that the Tourist Information Centres offers showers and big luggage lockers if you’re making your own way there need somewhere to leave stuff while you get back out on the mountain.
